The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a national, unformed youth organisation. The aim of the CCF is to provide a disciplined organisation in a school so that pupils can develop powers of leadership, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance. The CCF at King’s is open to students in Shells and above and consists of an Army and an RAF section. The Contingent is amongst the busiest in the country and students have a huge range of opportunities. Training is progressive and pupils have the opportunity to take part in many activities including camps, gliding trips, range days and adventure training. Those who show leadership and commitment will be given opportunities to take real responsibility within the unit and are rewarded through a rank structure. The Contingent is commanded by a teacher, Major Michael Lee. Sergeant Major Tony Brown (Welsh Guards) is the School Staff Instructor and is responsible for much of the day-to-day running of the unit. Any enquiries should be directed to Major Michael Lee
The DofE scheme is demanding and stimulating, an opportunity to do something different and is also a huge amount of fun! Students from the age of 14 are encouraged to do things that perhaps ordinarily they would not have considered undertaking. The Award is broken down into three levels of challenge; Bronze, Silver and Gold. They do not have to be taken consecutively, and in fact people can launch themselves into Silver or Gold without having to do the previous level (this is known as Direct Entry). Whether you do this, or to work progressively through is a matter for personal choice; each has its merits. If you are interested in the DofE scheme, please contact Mr Brown: dab@kingschester.co.uk
We firmly believe in giving our Sixth Formers the opportunity to lead. Many Prefect positions are available and are assigned on the basis of a vote made by both the students and staff body. The Prefect system operates in all areas of life at King’s with Head Prefects taking responsibility across many areas of the School. They are a role model for the younger pupils and undertake duties including School assemblies, open mornings, parents’ evenings and assisting staff in the dining hall.
