Chester Monopoly: King’s celebrates its place in Chester history

Have you seen the brand-new official MONOPOLY: Chester Edition game? Launched in November, the game features many of city’s historic sights, favourite shops and great charities, The King’s School is delighted to be featured on the prestigious dark blue space that is usually occupied by Park Lane.

The board is themed in sets from tourism to heritage, shopping to leisure – and more, all of which reflect the history and vibrancy of the city. As part of Chester’s history since 1541, Headmaster George Hartley, is proud that the school’s connection with the city will forever be immortalised in this very special way.

He said: “For almost 500 years, The King’s School has been a part of the fabric of the city of Chester and I am over the moon that this has been recognised on the new MONOPOLY: Chester edition board.

“We are immensely proud of our connection with the city.

“We celebrate our history in our original home, Chester Cathedral, with a termly service, but we also celebrate the many connections we have across the city in the present day from our hugely successful Chester Schools Together partnership with five of the city’s secondary schools to our students’ volunteering in local care homes and primary schools.

“It makes me very happy that our pupils will be able to play this version of the famous game in our library whenever they wish, and I know that our alumni, many of whom have moved away from the city, will also be keen to reminisce about their time at school in Chester as they play.”

When it was announced earlier this year that Chester was getting its very own version of the world’s most popular board game, the public was invited to send in suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature. Landing at the top of the board is Chester Zoo, whilst the Eastgate Clock occupies Old Kent Road, the game’s most affordable square.

The board has also been further customised in a uniquely Cestrian way with the Chance and Community Chest squares reflecting some of Chester’s myths and legends. One card rewards players with money as compensation for being thrown out of the city as a Welshman entering Chester before sunrise. Another fines players for mistaking fog on the River Dee for a ghost!

The board has been produced by Winning Moves UK.

They said: “This board is a celebration of everything Chester – from Roman times to present times and we were truly spoilt for choice when putting this edition of MONOPOLY together. We produce official MONOPOLY games based on places all over the world including, in recent years, Palm Beach, Dubai, Phuket and The Hamptons. Now Chester has joined the world’s MONOPOLY elite!”

Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Razia Daniels, joined Mr Monopoly at the launch party at Chester Zoo. She said: “It’s a true honour for Chester to have its very own edition of Monopoly. This iconic game brings people together, and with our city’s rich history and vibrant community, it’s fitting to have our landmarks and charities featured.”
