On Friday 30 June, we took to our usual spot at Henley Cricket Club, a tradition that many in the King’s community look forward to every year.
Earlier in the week, King’s had raced in the 2023 Henley Royal Regatta with a Girls 1st VIII and Boys 1st & 2nd VIII. The Girls VIII and Boys 2nd VIII performed well in the qualifying races but faced tough competition for limited spots at the regatta. The Boys 1st VIII managed to progress to the round of 32 in the main draw after racing well in the qualifiers.
In the round of 32, the Boys 1st VIII was drawn against Llandaff R.C. They raced with determination and skill but were unable to defeat Llandaff, who became the first club crew to compete in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley.
On Friday, Alumni from numerous generations gathered to reconnect and celebrate their shared experiences. One of the highlights of the day was the naming of a new club four, named after Pat Hanratty (OKS 2013). After stroking the 1st VIII at Henley in 2013, Pat has gone on to achieve great things as a videographer, detailing his rowing journeys over the last few years. Pat sat at stroke in the Thames Rowing Club Britannia Cup coxed four, which won at Henley Royal Regatta in 2022.
Iced Pimms, Prosecco, beer, soft drinks and snacks were served throughout the day and a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all.
David Blackham, Director of Rowing, was pleased to see so many people enjoying the day.
He said: “I am delighted that so many alumni from previous school years and Henleys have come together today.
“I’d also like to take the opportunity to congratulate the boys first VIII who represented the club with such pride during the Regatta, and to thank everyone to turned out to support Pat during the boat naming ceremony.”
