Avid readers qualify for London final

For the third year in a row, a team of King’s pupils have made it to the finals of the National Reading Championship Quiz.

The annual event is organised by the National Literacy Trust and aims to celebrate reading culture within schools and encourage reading for pleasures, reading diversity and the development of reading stamina. On Monday, 4 March, twelve students from Junior School and Senior School travelled to Birkenhead School to compete in the regional round of the quiz.

Teams from 15 schools across Merseyside and Manchester took part in the quiz which required students to use their wide range of book and author knowledge.

Congratulations to King’s Seniors Team A (pictured top left) who took first place and will now compete in the national final in London at the end of May.

The winning team comprised of Edmund, Matthew, Connie and Ben from Removes.

King’s Seniors Team B (pictured top right) was made up of Removes pupils Anika, Rithi, Andrea and Isabella who finished in an impressive fifth place.

King’s Juniors (pictured bottom left) put in a solid performance, coming 13th overall in a field of mainly secondary school pupils. Well done to Ruben, Finely, Giovanna and Kabir.

Head Librarian, Jodie Brooks, accompanied the students to Birkenhead, along with Head of English Robert Aldridge and J4 teacher Jonathan Melville.

She said: “The competition today was tough but our pupils held their own and worked well in their teams. This is the third consecutive year that King’s pupils have made it to the national finals in London and I couldn’t be prouder.

“All of the pupils who took part represented the school brilliantly. Their love of books and reading is infectious and it was a real joy to see them share that with like-minded children from other schools.”

Good luck to Edmund, Ben, Connie and Matthew in May.
