Careers Breakfast with Amelia Bain-McCullough and Virginia Kettle

We were delighted to welcome Amelia Bain-McCullough and Virginia Kettle from West Cheshire Museums to this week’s Careers Breakfast.

Amelia and Virginia both work in the Education team across all of West Cheshire’s museums, which include Chester’s Grosvenor Museum.

They gave an overview of the range of roles available in the museum sector and talked about the pathways that students can take.

Students also learned that the items displayed by a museum at any one time only make up around 5% of their entire collection and that much of West Cheshire’s collection is stored in a salt mine near Northwich, which provides the perfect conditions to preserve artefacts.

Students enjoyed getting hands-on with some 1950s objects (Kitty and Alex are pictured with headscarves from the collection), and learned how they are used with Dementia patients as part of the museum’s outreach service.

Dr Hensman thanked Amelia and Virginia for their time this morning.

He said: “It was fantastic to hear about the different roles in museums, and about what an exciting time it is for museums right now as they begin to embrace new technologies.

“It was also interesting to hear about the Young Producers programme that Amelia runs for 13 – 25 year olds that gives them the opportunity to give their voice to the local museum service.”

Next week’s careers breakfast is with Marine Biologist, Ian Gloyne-Phillips. Senior School students can sign up now on SOCS.
