At this morning’s careers breakfast, students from Removes to Upper Sixth heard from Steven Flynn, Sports Barrister and Arbitrator, who gave an interesting insight into his work in Sports Law.
Steven began the session with a lesson in some legal basics, including the difference between a barrister and a solicitor, as well as an overview of his work in arbitration.
He then went on to talk about some of the cases he has been involved with in recent years, including a cyclist involved in the country’s first so-called e-doping case, rugby players in wage disputes, and footballers facing match-fixing allegations.
Steven also outlined the qualities and qualifications that aspiring barristers need to be successful, answering student questions about pathways in Law.
Dr Hensman was grateful to Steven for sharing his experiences.
He said: “Thank you to Steven for his time this morning. His session was really informative and gave students a useful insight into what a barrister does on a day-to-day basis.
“He also gave some really good advice to students who are interested in his specific area of Law, recommending online publications and podcasts tol improve their understanding of how the business of sport works.”
Next week’s careers breakfast is with Amelia Bain-McCullough who will be talking about careers in the museum sector. Senior School students can sign up now on SOCS.
