Chester Schools Together cast their votes in prestigious book award

On Wednesday, 21 June, more than 35 students made their way to Chester’s Storyhouse to vote in the prestigious Yoto Carnegie Awards.

The students from King’s, Blacon High School, The Bishops Blue Coat and Queens Park High School have been shadowing the judging for the past three months to review and rate the shortlist in order to determine who won their vote on the day.

The students enjoyed a mezze lunch and held a grand prize raffle in celebration of the event which they viewed via a live stream in the venue’s Garret Bar.

All students and staff were able to cast their vote on the day, with the group voting for The Light of Everything by Katya Balen. The staff vote went to the overall Judges’ winner of The Blue Book of Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros.

Head Librarian at King’s, Jodie Brooks,  said: “It’s always inspiring and delightful to be surrounded by so many keen readers and this group didn’t disappoint in their excitement for the event. The students and staff had a great time and I’ve already had requests for us to take part next year!”

The overall winners of the prestigious award were:

  • Carnegie Award: The Blue Book of Nebo by Manon Steffan Ros
  • Shadower’s Choice: I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepety
