Football: Imogen & Rowan are trailblazers on the pitch

This season, two girls in Removes (Year 7),  Rowan I’Anson (RMSC) and Imogen Pugh (RMRA) have been blazing a trail on the football pitch with regular spots in the Removes A team.

Andy Davies, Director of Football at King’s, said: “We base our team selections on merit, ability and commitment to training, regardless of gender.

“Women’s football is increasingly popular, especially after the inspirational win by the Lionesses at last year’s Euros and this year is the first time that girls have played in the A team.

“They are both talented players and it’s a joy to see Rowan and Imogen regularly earn their places on the team.”

Both girls play football outside of school. Rowan plays centre-mid for Upton JFC Panthers U12s boys’ team and Imogen plays centre back for Airbus U13 girls. Both girls also play together with the Wrexham AFC U12 Development team.

Imogen said: “With Airbus, I play in the North East Wales league but have also played against pro clubs including Aston Villa, Preston and Accrington Stanley. Before I joined Airbus, I was at Chester Nomads where I played with Ralph and Seth who I now play with at King’s.”

On Saturday, 11 February, Rowan and Imogen played for the A team against Cheadle Hulme and were delighted that they also fielded a female player.

They said: “It was the first time we have played against another school at U12s with a girl on their team. Lori was really good and we loved playing against her, even though the result didn’t go in our favour.”

All girls are welcome to train with their year group’s football team. For more information, please contact Mr Davies or Mr Lunn.
