On Saturday, 1 February, the Drama Department held its first annual Drama Dinner at the Queen’s Hotel in Chester.
Still on a high after the runaway success of the most recent production, Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical, which had ended its four-night run just one day earlier, staff and students gathered to celebrate Drama at King’s.
Pupils from Thirds to Upper Sixth who study or take part in extra-curricular Drama were invited to join in the fun and Director of Drama, Mrs Howdon, was delighted to see so many in attendance.
She said: “It was an absolute joy to welcome so many pupils to celebrate with us this evening. Every success we have in the Drama department is thanks to the talent and dedication of these students.”
The evening began with a welcome drink and opportunities to have photographs taken with friends, colleagues and castmates before enjoying a delicious dinner and some lively dancing.
James Ashcroft (5DUT) gave an inspiring speech about the importance of Drama in our society, before handing the floor – and microphones – over to performances from the casts of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bonnie and Clyde, the 2024-25 hugely successful shows.
Mrs Howdon again: “These performances were the highlight of the evening for me, truly reflecting the hard work and passion of our talented students and it was a privilege – and quite emotional – to hear them perform songs from this year’s shows one more time.
“This has been an evening of fun, reflection and celebration of the remarkable achievements of our Drama students, and I very much hope that it will become an annual event in our department calendar.”
The final word, from his fabulous speech, goes to James who summed up the importance of the Drama department at King’s: “Not only does it serve both as an academic means to an end, or for some, an end in its final and most pure form, but as a portal to our full potential.”
