Indoor Hockey: Success for U13 and U15 boys

Our U13 and U15 boys’ hockey squads are celebrating a week of success after securing Silver and Gold medals respectively at the Manchester Grammar School (MGS) Powerplay tournament.

The annual 7-a-side competition sees our squads playing against some of the best schools in the North of England and Midlands.

In the U13s, King’s won all five of their first-round matches before taking on MGS in the semi-final. A nail biting match saw King’s take the win at 4-3 to set up a final against Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School.

In a tense final, King’s came from behind back to draw 3-3. However, tournament rules classed one of the Bishop Vesey goals as double, meaning that they emerged at the tournament winners.

In the U15s tournament, King’s again topped their pool before entering a six-team round robin for the Cup.

After beating the hosts 3-1 in what was arguably the game of the day, the boys went on to enjoy victories over the other teams in the group.

King’s dominated the final in which they beat second-placed MGS 4-1 to claim the trophy.

Hockey coach Chris Ashcroft said: “Playing against most of the best schools in the country, the U13s and U15s performed exceptionally well. Unfortunately, the tournament rules went against us in the U13s final but the boys played fantastically and should be proud of themselves.

“Likewise, the U15s team was outstanding with every one of the King’s squad scoring a goal. A real team effort in both age groups which was a joy to watch in what is a hugely competitive tournament. Well done!”
