On 6 February 2023, Joe Williams (SHDUT) was in Munich where he played a central role in the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.
Joe plays for the U13 Academy at Manchester United where all players take part in an enrichment programme which includes learning about the history of the club.
Pat Burns, chairman of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF), visited the U13s a few weeks ago to speak to them about the legacy of the Busby Babes, their achievements and the 1958 tragedy.
The boys were then asked to write a poem for the upcoming memorial service.
Joe’s poem was chosen by the MMMF and he was very proud to close the ceremony with his self-penned poem. The ceremony was held on the city’s Manchesterplatz and was attended by dignitaries from both Manchester United and Bayern Munich, as well as more than one thousand Manchester United fans.
The memorial service was one element of a three day trip to Germany which saw the U13s spending time in a local school, training at Bayern Munich, handing out scarves to local people and some time for sightseeing in Munich.
