Congratulations to our junior debate team who recently took part in their first public competition.
The team of three, which consisted of Removes pupil Ben, and Shells pupils Elif and Rowan didn’t let the grand surroundings of Chester Town Hall put them off as they debated the topic: The school week should be reduced to four days.
The Rotary Youth Speaks public speaking competition is organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland to support and encourage the development of effective communication skills in young people.
Taking part in the first round of the competition, the team was accompanied to Chester Town Hall by Mrs McNabb who runs Junior Debating Society.
She said: “The team was very impressive, especially considering that this was their first competition.
“This has been a really good experience for the young debaters and I am very proud of them.”
The judges praised the young team for their professionalism, teamwork and thoughtful perspectives.
They said: “Congratulations to you all for taking on this challenging yet rewarding experience. The courage, preparation, and effort you all demonstrated was excellent.
“Debating is not just about winning but about developing critical skills that will serve you throughout life – articulating your views, listening to others, and thinking critically.
“You’ve done an incredible job, and I hope you continue to embrace opportunities to build your confidence and skills.”
Junior Debating Society takes place every Wednesday lunchtime and is open to all pupils in Removes, Shells and Thirds. Pupils can sign up on SOCS.
