The King’s School presents Les Misérables

If you’ve passed by the Vanbrugh Theatre this term, it’s likely that you’ve heard the powerful sounds of One Day More raising the roof.

Rehearsals for Les Misérables are well and truly underway ahead of February’s performances and the cast of sixty pupils is hard at work learning the complex music and building authentic characters to convey the well-known, emotional story.

The chorus and ensemble include a number of our new Removes (year seven) students, which has delighted Director of Drama, Clare Howdon: “It is great to see so many of our new, youngest students getting involved in this ambitious production.

“The Removes are obviously enjoying working alongside the older students, and their excitement at being involved in such a big project at the beginning of their time at King’s was palpable during our rehearsal weekend at the end of September.”

For Removes pupils, this will be their first production but for some of our students, Les Misérables will mark the last time that they step on to the Vanbrugh Theatre stage.

Ed Dawson (U6WER) plays the role of Jean Valjean reflected on his experience so far: “Being a part of this production means a lot to me, especially as it is my last show at Kings and I am playing my dream role.

“I have really enjoyed the challenge of playing Jean Valjean and feel I have built stronger friendships with my peers during the process.”

Director, Julia Williams, has been impressed by the students’ commitment and engagement so far.

She said: “The students have been amazing and their level of commitment is already showing in the high standard of performance that we are seeing, even in these early stages of rehearsal.

“I am looking forward to watching the students grow in confidence and skill during the rehearsal process and I cannot wait to bring all the elements of set, costume and lighting to the final performances in February.”

Les Misérables will be performed over four nights in February 2023. Tickets will be released closer to the performance dates.
