On Thursday, 27 February, Junior School pupils welcomed a familiar face to assembly but were surprised to learn that she was there to present a very special award.
Kelly Marks, Community Fundraiser for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, visited the Junior School on her last day in the job to thank them for the incredible amount of money they have raised for the charity over the last year.
Thanks to amazing fundraising initiatives such as the Festive Fun Run, Junior School pupils have raised more than £10,000 in the last twelve months which, as Kelly explained, means that they receive a platinum award.
She said: “These awards are a new initiative to thank local schools and businesses for their support.
“The King’s Junior School have been huge supporters of the Hospice for a number of years and it gives me great pleasure to present them with our their platinum award. They are the first school to achieve this award and they should be very proud of their fantastic fundraising efforts and the work their money helps the Hospice to do.”
J4 teacher David O’Neil works closely with charity committee, which is made up of representatives from each form, on the school’s fundraising initiatives and he thanked them for their hard work and commitment.
He said: “The pupils on the charity committee are always so enthusiastic and full of ideas; it is them that we have to thank for the success of our fundraising. The Hospice of Good Shepherd relies on donations from the public to do its vital work and I am delighted that our pupils have been able to help them over the last few years.
“This very special award will be displayed very proudly in the Junior School.”
The next big fundraising event in Junior School is the £10 enterprise challenge.
Mr O’Neil explained how the challenge will work: “Every form group has been given £10 and has been tasked with turning it into at least £100. I can’t wait to see what the children come up with; some of the ideas I have already heard about are very creative and range from fun events such as bingo to a Lego sale!”
