Rowing: Birmingham Regatta

On Saturday, 27 April, 21 crews from King’s School Rowing Club (KSRC) travelled to Edgbaston Reservoir to take part in Birmingham Regatta which would see them compete in multiple, multi-lane races over 800m.

The morning division included five J14 boys coxed quads, two J15 girls coxed quads, two J15 boys doubles and one senior boys coxed four, all of whom raced in flat conditions against regional competition that included Hereford Cathedral School Boat Club and Stowe School.

In the afternoon division, four J14 girls coxed quads, three J15 boys coxed quads, two J15 girls doubles and a senior boys coxless quad all represented KSRC.

Ending the day with a total of six category wins including a win in an invitational eight against Stowe School, it was a successful regatta for the club.

The J15 and senior boys worked together to produce an outstanding performance, securing the win for KSRC.

Congratulations also go to the J14 girls coxed quad – Eva, Lucie, Emilia, Elizabeth and Cameron – who made it through the final to win their category, an incredible achievemnet in their first ever regatta race.

Coach Mr Cox praised all of the J14s on their first regatta experience.

He said: “Conditions were ideal for the J14s today. They had a great first competition with the rowers working extremely well together. It bodes well for the season – and years – ahead.”

J14 coach Val Edwards added: “The senior rowers have done a great job in supporting the J14s at the regatta today. It is fantastic to be part of a club where that help and support is always there for the younger crews.”

Deputy Director of Rowing, James Gray, echoed these comments, and thanked everyone that helped to make the regatta such a success.

He said: “All crews worked incredibly hard today and learned lots of lessons which they will take forward when they race at Shrewsbury regatta in two weeks’ time.

“It was an action-packed day and thanks have to go to the regatta organisers, as well as to the five KSRC coaches who supported the team in Birmingham, Mrs Edwards, Mr Cox, Dr Gillies, Miss Powell and Mr Hornby.”
