Rowing: Runcorn Head

On Saturday 5 March, King’s rowers enjoyed near-perfect conditions and produced some fantastic results at the Runcorn Head.

After weather and water conditions forced a number of races to be cancelled in the preceding weeks, the crews were excited to be able to travel to compete again.

Taking place towards the end of the Winter Head season, the conditions on the River Weaver were excellent as the region’s best crews came together to compete over the 6km course in both morning and afternoon divisions.

During the morning division, the boys’ first VIII came second overall, just behind a competitive Agecroft Men’s VIII, with the boys’ second VIII, along with the J16 and J15 boys’ VIIIs, also producing great performances.

In the afternoon, the girls’ first and second VIIIs competed against the region’s senior women’s and university teams.

Both VIIIs gave a great account of themselves to win in their categories with the girls’ first VIII posting the fastest female time of the day and the girl’s second VIII winning by over 95 seconds.

A special mention went to Grace Ryan and Eleanor Gill who competed in their first rowing race since joining King’s in September having never rowed before.

The crews are now looking forward the Schools’ Head of the River in London, which will take place on the iconic Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race course on the Thames. We wish them the best of luck for what will be a very memorable competition on Monday, 14 March.
