During October half-term, 54 senior rowers and eight coaches from The King’s School Rowing Club travelled to the world-renowned rowing training centre in Seville for an intensive training camp where they shared facilities with the Spanish National Rowing Team.
Superb conditions for the majority of the week meant that the athletes took every opportunity to build their mileage on the water ahead of the upcoming rowing season. Even when poor weather on two days limited time on the water, a state-of-the-art gym and training centre ensured that all squads could maintain and build on their routines
Director of Rowing, David Blackham, reflected on the experience: “This was a wonderful opportunity for our senior squad members to train like professional athletes for the week.
“They were able to fully maximise their training routines and invest in their rowing to boost their chances on the racing circuit this season.”
The busy schedule also allowed time for important revision, as well as a chance to enjoy the Spanish culture and cuisine.
Mr Blackham again: “Being a student athlete is all about balancing training with academic work so we ensured that the students had time to open their books and complete revision and homework.
“We also ensured that they were able to enjoy some downtime in Seville where they enjoyed sight-seeing and, of course, the food, making this a very memorable trip for our senior athletes.”
