Inaugural King’s MUN conference hailed a huge success

On Saturday, 11 November, King’s played host to the school’s first Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, welcoming 64 delegates from five schools to take part in diplomatic negotiations and debate across five committees.

Delegates were welcomed by Headmaster, Mr Hartley, MUN coordinator Mr Prest and Secretary General, Emily Burchett (U6DUT) and Deputy Secretary General Will Saul (U6DUT).

Guest speaker, Mr Nicholas Hercules, addressed the conference via a pre-recorded message. Mr Hercules has worked for the United Nations for more than 20 years in some of the world’s poorest and most troubled areas, and is currently based in South Sudan.

He spoke about the importance of the work of the UN, giving examples of both large scale international emergencies and the importance of sitting down with local people to solve problems on a human level.

Students from Upper and Lower Sixth chaired the five committees, many taking the role of chair for the first time, and oversaw some lively debate throughout the day.

Assistant Head Pastoral, Stephen Prest, coordinates MUN at King’s and congratulated all delegates on an excellent conference.

He said: “It has been a fantastic first conference for King’s. We have welcomed a mixture of first-time and experienced delegates from five schools, including King’s, and I have enjoyed observing the debate over the course of the day.

“MUN is so important as it requires young people to not just to research and understand global issues, but to see them through the eyes of other nations, other people. As a result, students who take part in MUN undoubtedly have a heightened global awareness.”

Thank you to delegates from Christleton High School, Rossall School, The Queen’s School Chester and Wirral Grammar School for Girls.

Members of The King’s School MUN are already preparing for their next conference which will take place at Queen’s on Saturday, 25 November.

MUN meets on Thursday after school and is open to all students from Fourths upwards.
