On Saturday, 19 November, the newly reconstituted King’s Model United Nations Society enjoyed its first conference at Q-MUN-2 at The Queen’s School, Chester.
Twelve Sixth Form students represented Kenya and Pakistan, debating issues including global water and food distribution in the context of a changing climate, the responsibilities of affluent countries towards poorer countries in relation to COVID-19 vaccines, and the current tension between China and Taiwan.
The conference and the preparation beforehand gave the students a unique opportunity to view an issue of global importance from a different perspective.
Through this approach, Model United Nations not only allows students to further their understanding of international relations and diplomacy but, by encouraging the understanding of different points of view, seeks to promote diplomacy, co-operation and peace.
A special mention goes to Jonathan Capper (U6WER) and Charlie Marshall (L6LES) who received Commended Delegate certificates for their work in the EnviroSci Committee and Security Council respectively, and Gwen Olson (L6GRO) who was Highly Commended for her superb performance in the EnviroSci Committee.
Mr Prest, who leads King’s MUN Society together with Miss Von Kuk, was delighted with the students’ performance at the conference.
He said: “This was the students’ first conference since MUN was restarted at King’s in September.
“Despite a relatively short amount of preparation time and only one of the twelve having taken part in MUN before, the students did fantastically well and were a credit to themselves. Their hard work and preparation paid off and they are now looking forward to attending their next conference in January.”
King’s MUN plans to send delegates to several more conferences throughout this academic year.
All students from Shells upwards are welcome to attend the society which meets every Friday in Room 23 at 12.50pm.
