Lower Sixth Pupils – Sports Awards and Special Prizes

The Academic Essay Prize Victoria Szymala
The Lower Sixth Academic Essay Competition is designed to allow students to demonstrate many of the independent academic skills demanded by universities. Our judge commented that there was a particularly high quality of essays this year and chose Victoria’s superb essay discussing “Is the world today a more dangerous place than during the Cold War?” as the winning entry. The judge was particularly impressed with Victoria’s very articulate and structured arguments throughout, and her comprehensive consideration of modern changes in global society as well as citing a lot of historical figures. He considered this one of the best essays he had read in over ten years of judging for us. Victoria is hoping to read History at university next year.

The Fergal O’Mahoney Prize for Keyboard Playing  Sam Gregory
Sam is a musician of the highest class, showing musicianship beyond his years. Sam is currently working towards his piano ARSM following gaining a distinction in his Grade 8 piano exam in
2022. It has been a pleasure to hear Sam performing on multiple occasions this year and I look forward to hearing him alongside the King’s Symphony Orchestra next academic year.

The Mumme-Young Hockey Cup Barnaby Wallis
Donated by the Mummé-Young family for the 1st XI player of the year. Barnaby has had a fantastic year in the 1st XI boy’s hockey team, showing high levels of performance and an outstanding attitude. His overall game has improved enormously through the season, and he is fully deserving of this accolade.

The Joan Saint Memorial Prize for Singing Maisie O’Leary KS
It is an absolute pleasure to be awarding this prize to Maisie. She is a Soprano with an exceptional talent who has continually developed her technique and confidence throughout her years at King’s. She is a committed member of Schola Cantorum and recently passed her Grade 7 singing exam with Distinction. Maisie showed off her amazing vocal skills playing the part of Cossette in this year’s school production of Les Misérables. We are very excited to see where her talent will take her next year!
