Senior School Prizegiving 2024

It was a pleasure to conclude the term with prizegiving ceremonies that recognised the achievements of our Senior School and Lower Sixth pupils.

Two ceremonies were held in the on-site marquee during which parents were entertained by readings, poems, and music performed by talented pupils.

Prizes were presented by former Head of School, Joseph Langley (OKS 2017). Joe, who studied Geography at Exeter before completing his Masters in Conservation at UCL, now works as a research Assistant at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Pupils, parents and staff alike were captivated by stories and photographs from his fieldwork in Africa but it was his advice to pupils that resonated with everyone present.

He spoke passionately about the importance of listening to your heart, not being afraid to take a less conventional path, and to be resilient in the face of rejection.

Recounting his own story of not getting into Cambridge for his undergraduate degree, Joe is now looking forward to embarking on a PhD there, studying the impact of elephant loss on local ecosystems.

A vote of thanks was given by incoming Head of School, Jonni Ashton (L6DUT), before Mr Hartley announced the winners of this year’s House competition. Congratulations to Walsh House!

Chair of Governors, Dr Sandra Verity, concluded the ceremony by congratulating the prizewinners, and thanking teachers and parents for their unwavering support of pupils and of the school.

Congratulations to all of our Removes to Lower Sixth 2023 – 24 prize winners who are named below.

The King’s School is truly fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented individual like Jack contributing to its vibrant musical community.
The Sarl-Williams Instrumental Prize for Strings James Philips
We are delighted to award this year’s strings prize to James. His commitment to the symphony orchestra and string orchestra, as well as the school’s string quartet, has been exceptional. As a violist he has to carry the sound of a whole section, which he does with style. Despite his GCSE exams he has continued to attend as many rehearsals as possible and has continued his weekly viola lessons, working towards his next ABRSM exam. We thank James for his dedication to music at King’s, and it is a pleasure to present him this well-deserved award.
The Peter Hold Memorial Prize for Acting  Henry Harrison
Henry has been awarded The Peter Hold Memorial Prize for Acting in recognition of his unfaltering dedication to the drama department and his fearless approach to performing a variety of different characters throughout his time at King’s. Henry is an actor of unparalleled energy and conviction and notable recent roles include The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, Conor’s Dad in A Monster Calls, and Paul in The Father, which successfully transferred to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2023. Among his many remarkable performances, Henry’s portrayal of Mark Renton in a recent GCSE monologue from Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting was particularly mesmerising, as was his depiction of troubled teen William Chadwick in Punk Rock by Simon Stephens. While we are sad to say goodbye to Henry, we wish him the best of luck at Shrewsbury School, where he has been awarded a Drama Scholarship to continue his studies at A-Level.
