King’s delegates commended at MUN Conference

On Saturday, 21 January, The King’s Model United Nations Society headed to Clitheroe to attend Stonyhurst College’s first Model United Nations (MUN) Conference.

The theme of the conference was Sustainability and 11 King’s students representing Israel and Saudi Arabia joined students from other schools to debate issues including overfishing, inequalities of access to education, and food security.

MUN gives students a fantastic opportunity to view important issues from a perspective other than their own as each delegate is required to represent the views and interests of their assigned country.

All King’s students acquitted themselves superbly with special mentions to Emily Burchett (L6DUT) and Charlie Marshall (L6LES).

Emily received a Commended Delegate certificate for her work representing Israel on the Health Committee, whilst Charlie excelled in the Economic and Social Committee picking up the coveted Best Delegate Award for his work representing Saudi Arabia.

Mr Prest and Miss Von Kuk accompanied the students and were very happy with the contribution made by the students.

Mr Prest said: “This is still only the second conference that we have attended since MUN was restarted at King’s in September, but we have already developed a core of students who are leading the society and driving it forward.

“This is very pleasing because MUN should be a student-led society. Our students are hoping to host our own conference in the Michaelmas Term next academic year so it is important for us to gain as much experience as possible.”

King’s MUN plans to send delegates to several more conferences this academic year. All interested students in Fourths and above are welcome to attend the society which meets every Friday in Room 23 at 12:50pm.
