King’s U13 Boys won the first Regional stage of the National Championships, holding off the challenge of seven other strong North West schools to win on home turf for the second time in four years. They topped their pool with wins over Wirral GS (9-0) and St Anselms (4-0), before being held 0-0 by Calday Grange. They won their semi final against Sandbach 3-0 before avenging last year’s final defeat against Altrincham GS, this time King’s emerged victors by 3-0.
They now qualify for the North of England Finals (matching the achievement of the King’s U11 and U12 teams!) and are still in the Independent Schools Cup where they face Calday later this week. Several players already have the experience of reaching the National Finals from last year and hopes are high for a repeat.
In the tournament itself all ten players played in every game, Theo Irvine top scored with six goals, Joe Osborne and Lloyd Bennett got four each, Adam Thwaite and Hugh Houghton two each, and Tom Lloyd-Brown one. Lloyd Bennett scored a fine hat-trick in the final!
